Dennert Poraver GmbH at the regatta for canoes made of lightweight concrete organized by the German Cement and Concrete Industry

The concrete canoe regatta helps to improve research on application techniques with lightweight concrete. Many teams of several universities participate in the race. The competition combines concrete building, boat design, sporting competition and fun in one event. In Germany, the canoe regatta was first organized by the Federal Association of the German Cement Industry (Bundesverband der Deutschen Zementindustrie e.V.) in 1986. The boat race takes place every two years. It was last held in Cologne in 2017. In this year it will be held on the Neckar river near Heilbronn.

Structural lightweight concrete as raw material for the canoes

More than 1,000 students from 120 teams compete at the regatta. They are not only interested in the event of canoeing. The main challenge is to design and build a fast, lightweight canoe out of lightweight concrete. The canoe should be stable in the water. The fact that concrete floats at all is the result of the right combination of craftsmanship, Archimedean physics and the use of the right materials. The latter is due to lightweight concrete. Today, this is used by almost all teams. Lightweight concrete is characterised by the fact that lightweight aggregates or granulates with a lower density are added to the classic concrete mixture.

Poraver® expanded glass as a lightweight aggregate in concrete is the key to the success of concrete canoes

Poraver® expanded glass as an aggregate in lightweight concrete contributes significantly to the success of concrete canoes. The mineral lightweight aggregate Poraver® is produced from post consumer recycled glass. This glass is expanded in a thermal process. As an aggregate, it enables the microstructure-tight lightweight concrete to achieve a very low density with an almost constant high compressive strength. Due to its porous structure, the specific density of Poraver® expanded glass is only 500 to 950 kg/m³, depending on the grain size used. This considerably reduces the bulk density of the lightweight concrete, whose density by definition already starts at 2,000 kg/m³.

This special composition enables lightweight concrete boats made of expanded glass to have the decisive light construction with the greatest possible displacement of water. Due to the specific bonding of the Poraver® expanded glass granulate to the cement matrix of lightweight concrete, excessive water absorption is prevented. This means further advantages for the concrete canoes during the regatta.
